Arizona Statewide Historic Preservation Conference slated for Flagstaff, May 13-14, 2010
Donovan Rypkema will be a featured speaker during "Preservation at a Higher Elevation," the Eighth Annual Statewide Historic Preservation Partnership Conference, to be held May 13-14, 2010 at the du Bois Center at Northern Arizona University.


SCOTTSDALE, AZ, December 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Donovan Rypkema is a favored presenter at this conference and is recognized as an industry leader in the economics of preserving historic structures. Since 1983 he has provided ongoing consulting services to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and its National Main Street Center. He has undertaken assignments in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Rypkema has worked with such groups as the Urban Land Institute, the Mayors' Institute on City Design, the American Planning Association, the International Downtown Association, International Town and City Centre Conference, the World Monuments Fund, the Center for Livable Communities and hundreds of other international, national, statewide and local organizations. Mr. Rypkema has conducted statewide studies of the economic impact of historic preservation in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, New York and Maryland and a citywide study in Philadelphia. An updated edition of Rypkema's book, The Economics of Historic Preservation: A Community Leader's Guide, was published by the National Trust for Historic preservation in 2005 and is widely used by preservationists nationwide. In 2006 the Russian Center for Heritage Trusteeship translated and published a Russian edition of the book.

"Preservation at a Higher Elevation" held jointly by Arizona State Parks, the State Historic Preservation Office, Main Street / Department of Commerce, non-profit Arizona Preservation Foundation, the Arizona Historical Society, and the Arizona Archaeological Council will bring together more than 300 people and organizations interested in current topics in preservation, drawn primarily from architectural, archaeological, historical research, consulting, real estate development, construction, general contracting, Tribal, legal, and state and local government organizations from across the Southwest.

General interest sessions at the 2010 Conference will include: Section 106 Training; Utilizing Google Map Layers; How to Start a Merchant Association; Historic Façade Grant Programs; Tucson's Downtown Master Plans, 1932-2009; The Future of Arizona State Parks; Preservation of the Livermore/Art Barn (Flagstaff). The program will also feature a Green Remodeling Workshop.

Archaeological Sessions will include: Contributions of Avocational Archaeologists to Historic Preservation; New Forest Projects; Old Stories - New Interpretations; Historic Cemeteries and the Joint Courts Project; Recording Navajo Homesites; The Las Capas Project; The Story of a Preservation Success - The Valencia Community of the Tucson Basin.
